Blog Tour: Interview & Giveaway with April Fifer & Danielle Hylton-Outland {Flesh & Feathers}

Please tell readers a little bit about yourself.
Danielle is 29 years old and is a huge animal activist. Danielle loves yoga (when time is allowed), and she is addicted to oversized comforters, and her all-time favorite movie is “Romancing The Stone.” Pet-peeve – When people refer to not being able to hear using the word “death.”
April is 33 years-old and is addicted to coffee. She literally needs coffee in her system before she makes coffee in the morning. She is secretly in love with Vanilla Ice, and April’s favorite move is “Footloose.” Pet-peeve – CLOTHES THE SHOWER CURTAIN.
Please tell us about your latest release.
Flesh and Feathers is exactly what it says. I know that’s a little vague… but here we go. It’s about being ordinary, and have something extraordinary happen to no one other than YOU! The main character, Azaleigh (aka: Az), is just that person. She is every girl, or at least we like to think so. Az works at a diner in downtown LA. Life is life, and she sees it no other way. She’s not a go-getter, but a survivor. At the beginning, by chance, she meets Kale. This is the guy! The one she wondered even existed. However, later she finds herself torn between him and her new neighbor Gage. Chaos unfolds, and Az is faced with decisions that will surely kill her.
Was there a character you enjoyed writing the most?
Danielle: My favorite character to write about was Kale. I always root for the underdog or the tortured soul, which he is. Kale is the mysterious, sexy and an oddly glum prototype of man. He is someone I want to fix.
April: Gage and Gage and umm… Gage. Okay. So to begin with, I didn’t like Gage. He was that creepy kid from Pet Sematary. Then I was like, okay. I think I like this guy even though he is a little self-centered. After that his character became out of my control. He developed himself. I had no clue what he would do next. I really learned about him as I kept writing. I hope that doesn’t sound crazy.
Which character has the most identifiable characteristics of yourself in them and what are they?
That character would be Azaleigh. We both relate to her so much and she is a perfect blend of us two. We have even come up with a funny slogan, “I just had an Az moment.” Azaleigh makes human decisions. She is corny, not all dolled-up, and she deals with life through sarcasm and with a grain of salt.
Do you have a special formula for creating characters’ names?
We do! We shout out names till the other person approves. This sometimes takes a while.
What was the last amazing book you read?
Danielle: “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett
April: “Seven Deadly Sins” by Corey Taylor
Can you leave readers with a little teaser from FLESH and FEATHERS?
Excerpt from upcoming book “Flesh and Feathers.”
I opened my eyes, and I could see of all the shades of blue that made his eyes so brilliant. They twisted and interlocked, creating the most vibrant color. He leaned towards me, and I felt my legs weak and wanting to give way. He held my gaze, and I wanted so badly to look away; this was not something I was ready for. Finally, his lips were within an inch of mine. I forced my eyes closed as he whispered, “Azaleigh.” He pressed his lips zealously to mine. With each supple kiss, my lips fell in perfect formation. A surge of heat rushed through me. His hands reached up cupping my jaw line on each side, holding me in place. His last kiss gently pulled at my top lip and softly let go. He lingered inches from my face. I stood there with my eyes closed. I was too petrified to open them. I felt his thumb brush across my cheek in reassurance. I couldn’t speak. I was afraid that my words would dissolve the moment, and I would never get it back again. But like all great things, the end was inevitable.

I have to say the title intrigues me. I wonder how it works with two writers on the one story.

Thank you for hosting today!
I’m curious like Mary is. You mention that to choose names, you shout them out until the other approves. Does that mean that you live near each other and work F2F? Or do you work togather virtually? How do you both contribute but avoid there being 2 distinct “voices” in the story–which can sometimes happen in a collaboration? I’m curious about the mechanics of co-authoring.

Hello Catherine and Mary. April and I get a lot of questions about co-authoring. We work together at a local company and we also live about ten minutes apart, so that makes getting together very easy. We recently wrote about co-authoring so I thought I would post that link just to help better understand the process better. Thanks for posting your comments and having such great questions.

Thanks so much for having us today!!!
I love how you choose names! It’s really a big part of the novel, a characters name. It can make or break the book for some people. Sounds like your system is fun!

Thanks for the interview ladies, it sounds like a lot of fun, working together like that. Does one of you write 1 main character, and the other another one? Or don’t you have a fixed “portion” of the book to write?
auriansbooks at gmail dot com
Hi Aurian!
Actually this is the funny part. Danielle and I write out the characters personality, so that when we each write a scene we already know the actions and reactions of a character. Then we re-read what each other has done several times to see if it actually fits that character. But because her and I are so much alike we pretty much get it the first go round.
It sounds like Gage took over when you were undecided. I love it when a character does that. The story sounds really fun.
Thank you for the interesting interview Ladies, I would like to know how did you two meet? And how did you have the idea to co-author a novel?
Thank you!

Lol, I think that it’s pretty awesome to brainstorm the names out loud

I love to read this book. It sounds awesome.
You don’t see many co-authors. I would think that would be harder to write that way. I’m following along on the hop. Your book sounds great and after that excerpt…well..I do believe I’m hooked…lol. Thanks =)
When did you decide that you should write together?
