Character interview: Alice’s Wonderland
When you’re writing a book, you get to deal with a whole cast of characters. Some you love, some you hate, some make you laugh, some make you gnash your teeth. I loved all the characters in Alice’s Wonderland: Alice, with her quirky style who makes integrity very sexy; Flynn, whose come-to-bed exterior masks a keep-me heart. And then there’s Tanja Thompson.
Tanja is Alice’s rival in the adult boutique business and … other areas. She strode into our book wearing high-heeled gladiator sandals laced all the way up, and quickly took over that part of our hearts that love a diamond in the rough.
She’s been busy demanding a book of her own ever since, but for now I decided to interview her and give you a little more insight into this unexpected star.
Allison Dobell: How would you describe your personal style?
Tanja Thompson: (laughs) “I’m from the Barely There school of dressing. I figure that God didn’t give me a body like this to hide it under clothing. I know Alice takes the ‘keep it under wraps to tease them’ approach – but I’m a bit more upfront.”
AD: What’s your relationship with Flynn O’Grady?
TT: “Well, now, wouldn’t you like to know that… Tanja never tells. That’s one reason my clients keep coming back.”
AD: Ah, yes, your clients – tell us about Hi Ho Silver?
TT: “We’re like a box of supermarket chocolates – cheap and cheerful. We’ve got ‘toys’ to suit every woman, in every colour if she so chooses, and we make it easy for a girl to sample every variety.”
AD: Why did you go into the sex, er, ‘toy’ business?
TT: “Honey, there’s not much I haven’t tried as far as the sex industry is concerned. But I’m at that point in my life where I want to play. When I couldn’t find a toybox that gave me everything I needed, I created one.”
AD: Do you have a man of your own?
TT: (laughs) “I’m not sure that you need one of your own when you can have everyone else’s if you so desire… Seriously, I haven’t met the man who can give me everything I need – and they’re a lot harder to create than businesses.”
AD: What’s next for Tanja Thompson?
TT: “You tell me, honey, you tell me.”
